Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

Psychologists and psychiatrists both examine people’s cognition, emotions and behaviours and both help people to manage challenges that arise in their lives. Psychologists have typically studied for around 6 years to deliver diagnostic assessment and treatment services. Psychologists are unable to prescribe medications, as they are not medical doctors. Psychiatrists have studied medicine and so also have the ability to prescribe medications as part of treatment.

Will I be able to access medication through neuropsychology services?

Psychologists are not medical doctors and do not prescribe medication. However, we can assist in providing important diagnostic and treatment information to your medical team (e.g., GP, psychiatrist, paediatrician), to inform their decisions around whether medication would be suitable for you.

Am I eligible for a Medicare rebate?

You can claim up to 10 psychological sessions per calendar year on Medicare with a referral and/or Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician. After receiving 6 sessions through this referral, you will need to revisit your doctor for a review to continue receiving the Medicare rebate for the remaining 4 sessions in the calendar year. The Medicare rebate per session for a registered psychologist is currently set at $98.95.

Can I access rebates through my Private Health Insurance?

Please contact your private health insurer to discuss rebates. Please note that you are unable to claim both Medicare and Private Health rebates for the same session.

Do I need to have a referral to see a psychologist?

No, you do not need a referral to see a psychologist. However, you will be unable to access Medicare rebates without a referral before your appointment.

What is Neuropsychology?

Neuropsychology is the study of the brain’s structure and functioning, and how this relates to human cognition, emotions and behaviour. Clinical Neuropsychology is the application of this study to patients or clients, to provide psychological assessment and treatment for cognitive, emotional and behavioural difficulties. This framework provides a scientific, evidence-based approach to helping people solve these problems.

An appointment cancelled or rescheduled within 24 hours is subject to a cancellation fee equal to 50% of the cost of the appointment. Future appointments cannot be booked until payment of the cancellation fee. Please contact the clinic for any questions or concerns on appointment cancellations.
